Celebrities With Thyroid Disease

Oprah

One of the most famous celebrities with thyroid disease is Oprah Winfrey and there are many articles about her battle.

When we are suffering with thyroid disease and its associated conditions, we often forget, we are not alone. Thyroid Disease affects the Rich and Famous too. (Like scoliosis) and is becoming an epidemic illness.

Please browse below to see other celebrities who suffer just as we do. The selection may surprise you.

Davina McCall was diagnosed with hypothyroidism while trying for her daugher Holly. Many of us can associate with Davina because she has a history of things like alcohol and drug abuse, a failed marriage, being abandoned as a child and many other stressful situations, but has triumphed over these to become a succesful presenter and of course she is famous for the advert for Garnier Nutrisse Hair Colour. Clare Balding (38), the well known sports presenter is currently battling Thyroid Cancer and has already had her thyroid gland removed (thyroidectomy) with further treatment due to start in July 09. She will then be undergoing Radio Active Iodine treatment. Of course, Clare's career is a concern since her voice is her life, being a presenter and she is currently experiencing some hoarsness post op. She is a determined lady and has vowed to be back in the limelight as soon as possible. Good for her. However, she will of course be on thyroid meds for life. Lets hope she makes the right choice. Melissa Porter (35) was very young when she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of only 26. She is a very popular and beautiful presenter and journalist of lifestyle and travel programmes here in the UK and much sought after She is also a patron of the British Thyroid Foundation (boo hiss - wish we could convert her) and actively supports them. She was diagnosed because she was piling on the weight, was depressed and exhausted and also had a swelling in her neck. She takes 125mcg Levothyroxine.

While she appears very lively on screen, she actually battles hypothyroidism and is often exhausted and unwell with brain fog and forgetfulness. (she probably needs to try Armour!!) She has a rigourous diet and exercises avidly with a personal trainer. Read more here

Gloria Hunniford is no stranger to illness and has had many tradegies in her life, the most prominant being the death of her beautiful daugher, Caron Keating to breast cancer in 2004.

Gloria discovered she had hypothyroidism after a health check highlighted raised cholesterol levels. She then discovered that hypothyroidism was the cause rather than poor diet.

Gloria was given thyroxine and this reduced her cholesterol levels. Dr Amit Allahabadia, consultant endocrinologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, and secretary to the British Thyroid Association states that anyone with high cholesterol should also have their thyroid checked.
