Well Women Guide to Cystitis and Bladder Infection

cranberries

Cystitis and bladder infections are very painful and of course can also lead to further complications such as kidney infections or even incontinance in later life. Cystitis has a connection with autoimmune disease and may be regularly or chronically experienced by sufferers.

I am lucky in that I rarely suffer from bladder or kidney infections despite having an autoimmune disease, but have done in the past and would not wish to have another one....ever. I suffer with a weak bladder and feel that the further complication of cystitis would probably be my worst nightmare.

However, Clare, my daughter occasionally gets cystitis. She is someone who just seems to get all these problems, but, with natural remedies, she is improving greatly.

We always avoid going to the doctor where possible. (I am not suggesting you should, however, as your GP should be your first port of call for any illness. It is just our preference to try to cure something holistically prior to a GP visit as I am adverse to taking prescription medication)

What is Cystitis?

It is an infection of the bladder/lower urinary system. It is most often caused by infection from intestinal bacteria. Inadequate emptying of the bladder can cause stagnation of urine causing bacteria to settle in the bladder.

Wiping from front to back is important in order to avoid transfer of bacteria from the anus to the urethra.

Increased sexual activity can lead to cystitis where there is damage or bruising.

Menopause. menopausal women are more at risk due to the amount of hormonal changes making the bladder more susceptible to infection. This is due to a thinning of the lining of the urethra and bladder and less lubrication and mucus means that bacteria can multiply with ease.

The using of perfumed products or vaginal deoderants may make the urethra susceptible to infection.

Other causes?

STD's can cause bladder infection. (Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea)

Candida (thrush) infection can lead to bladder infection

Tampon use

Urinary system blockage

Diabetes

Symptoms

Burning or pain during urination

Frequent and urgent urination, but passing only small amounts and sometimes, none at all.

Pain directly above the pubic bone

Pain in the lower back and lower abdomen

Cloudy urine

Foul smelling urine

Sometimes, blood in the urine.

Sometimes, in a severe infection, elevated temperature and hallucinations.

In elderly women, confusion, weakness

In children, lethargy, vomitting raised temperature, loss of appetite.

Most at risk?

Pregnant women

Elderly women

Children who do not wipe themselves properly

People using a catheter

People who practise unprotected sex with a variety of partners, especially young people.

Women where there is a sudden increase in sexual activity, e.g when starting a new relationship after a long period of abstinence. This is caused by damage or bruising from vigorous or frequent sex.

Women using a diaphragm.

How can it be avoided?

Good hygiene (although those with good hygiene can still develope it)

Completely emptying the bladder during urination. (often when we are in a rush, we do not empty the bladder sufficiently)

Daily consumption of plenty of water (not tap) to flush the bladder and kidneys of toxins and bacteria

Rocking backwards and forwards on the toilet to ensure complete emptying of the bladder.

Yes, the old and popular remedy, Cranberry Juice works as does flushing the system with plenty of mineral water (Never Tap) but this needs to be practised regularly (daily) even when there is no infection. Cranberry juice and capsules are both available. Cranberry works by preventing bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. drink one glass a day if you are susceptible to repeated infections.

Ensure you urinate after sexual intercourse to flush out any bacteria.

Wash before and after sex.

Make sure you urinate regularly rather than holding on to it for long periods of time. Retaining stagnant urine will make infections more likely.

Severe infections are diagnosed by a urine test. Antibiotics can be prescribed.

The cause of repeated infections will need to be identified by tests such as ultrasound scans, x-rays or a cytoscopy (telescopic examination of the bladder)

But there are also other remedies out there.

Chamae Rose

Strengthens kidneys and bladder (also lungs, beautifies skin and dries sinus excretions with speed) Has a detoxifying effect on the entire body without weakening it. Chamae Rose increases urine flow so eliminating toxins in the process. Less night time visits to the toilet too.

Zell Oxygen and Zell Oxygen Immunocomplex - may also be of great help, not just for cystitis, but for a host of other problems too, such as Candida, compromised immune systems and many other conditions.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver works well in co-ordination with Zell Oxygen -
